The Rhine valley
between Koblenz and Bingen was listed by UNESCO as a World
Heritage Site on 28 June 2002. The eyes of the World were
drawn to this idyllic river valley, its castles, vineyards
and romantic towns and villages, now granted a status on a
par with the Loire and the Danube.
Through this majestic scenery alongside the Rhine runs the
Rheinsteig – a path for walkers and hikers. It goes all the
way from Cologne to Wiesbaden (some 220 Km) and can be
followed in planned daily stages. It passes by many places
of cultural and historic importance. There are also remote
castle ruins, stately homes, gothic churches and small
vineyard chapels along its route, all waiting for you to
discover.
Around Lorch, some 20 Km downriver from Bingen, as the
Rheinsteig passes through the steep hillside vineyards on
the right bank of the Rhine, you can also find out more
about the “Freistaat-Flaschenhals” - (an interesting
historical anomaly whereby a Free State was declared in the
area following 1918). Remarkably, there are no bridges over
the Rhine between Bingen and Koblenz but you can easily
cross with one the various traditional ferries to visit
attractions on the left bank- (e.g.: from Lorch to
Niederheimbach).
What better, after a day’s walking, than to relax in a
friendly wine café trying the regional dishes and tasting
the world famous Riesling or the excellent Spätburgunder
wines and then to spend the night in a comfortable room next
door to the winery. Roessler’s Winery in Lorch am Rhein
invites you to escape from the daily stress and do just
that. Understandably, many of our guests don’t want to
leave! |
